Your Guide Through Medical Chaos

Hi, I'm Dr. Becky Powers

I'm a geriatrician—a doctor who specializes in caring for older adults, which means I deal with medical complexity all day long. For over a decade, I've been caring for older patients and teaching other doctors how to do the same.

A few years ago, my own body decided to get creative. Multiple sclerosis, thyroid cancer, and other diagnoses that changed my life—just like Peter Parker's spider bite, but way less fun and with no web-slinging involved.

As a doctor, I've spent years honing my skills in treating complex patients. But becoming a complex patient required recognizing and developing superpowers I never knew I had. And with great complexity comes great responsibility—to teach others how to navigate the chaos.

Why "Aging with Superpowers"?

Because my last name is Powers, obviously. But also because aging shouldn't be treated like everyone's inevitable kryptonite.

Getting older or getting sick isn't about quietly accepting whatever your body throws at you. It's about developing superpowers to handle whatever chaos the universe decides to unleash.

Your superpowers are already there - they just need activating:

  • Your Persistence: You've survived everything life has thrown at you so far - that's not luck, it's superpowers

  • Your Questions: You're empowered to learn more about your health--that's a superpower

  • Your Intuition: You pay attention to your spidey sense when it comes to your health--that is the definition of a superpower

The Guide-by-Your-Side Promise

Here's what you won't get from this blog: me as the sage on the stage, lecturing you about what you should do. You don't need to be lectured in your free time - that's what social media is for.

Here's what you will get: A guide by your side through medical complexity, real talk from a doctor who has lived it, permission to laugh at healthcare's absurdity, and the encouragement to keep navigating your way through the chaos.

This blog exists because medical complexity shouldn't require a medical degree to navigate.

Ready? Let's do this thing.
